Kind of a neat color here; this is a Multi-County Zone Truck plate, but I have no idea what that really means. |

This is a very distinctive color scheme, similar to one used by Kentucky on some of their Disabled Vet plates, though it should be noted that Tennessee started this distinctive coloring in 1951, and Kentucky in 1971. |

Ah, yes. This was the type of Tennessee plate we had on our vehicles when we moved to Maine in 1982 (first introduced in 1977). Numbers were 2-B3790 and 2-B3791, if memory serves. Anyone have them?
The county codes (the leading '9' on this plate) were based on the rank of each county in population totals. 1 denoted Shelby County (Memphis), 2 denoted Davidson County (Nashville), and so on. I'm not sure what the ninth-largest county is. |

This is the next base Tennessee used, which was introduced in 1984. |

With this base, introduced in 1989, the county prefix was abandoned in favor of a county sticker at the bottom of the plate, which is still in use today. The bottom-right sticker is a county tax that reads "Davidson County Passenger."
This plate maintained addresses in Tennessee, Georgia, Montana, Alaska, Oklahoma, Texas and North Carolina before being replaced. Thanks to Cousin Henrí for donating it to the cause. |

This is the BicenTENNial baseplate, introduced in 1995. These plates were issued until 2000, when the "Sounds Good to Me" base was introduced. |

This is the trailer version of the BicenTENNial baseplate. Like most trailer plates, it's all business.
Thanks to Cousin Henrí for adding this plate to the collection. |

Special thanks to Bill Hughey for trading this plate to me. It's a very unexciting Vanderbilt University plate, but has special relevance to me as I attended Vanderbilt and have been looking for one of these plates for about eight years! |

Here's the current baseplate, introduced in 2000. Nice-looking plate. The green Tennessee image in the middle was originally too dark, as on this plate, which made it hard to read the third and fourth digits in the plate. The image was lightened on later issues. |
